According to the economist Thomas Robert Malthus, food production increases in arithmetical progression (1,2,3,4,..), while population increases in geometrical progression (2,4,8,16,…). Therefore, it was announced that in the 20th century the entire world would face great catastrophes and starvation. This did not actually happen.
